Essay Two Outline

Thesis statement: Kerry Healy uses the appeals of both pathos and logos to influence the audience to vote for Mitt Romney for President of the United States of America.

Topic One: The appeal to pathos was evident throughout Kerry Healy’s entire speech. In the beginning of her speech she spoke about Massachusetts losing hope for its future as a state because the unemployment rate was sky rocketing. She went on to talk about how Mitt Romney restored not only the hope for a brighter future but, safe guarded the people living in the state. “Mitt Romney is a good and honorable man,” states Healy. Clearly she is trying to appeal to the emotions of her audience when she speaks of his honorability. Healy emphasizes that Romney focuses on those in need instead of himself even on the day of his inauguration for Governor of the state of Massachusetts. She uses key words such as hope and pride to reinforce her ideas. Finally, Healy discusses Romney’s family values and his ability to live them every day. The appeal to pathos is a strong tool used within this speech. The appeal is very effective because Healy knows how to influence her audience with her appeal to emotions because she is speaking to an audience in favor of her argument that Mitt Romney should become President of the United States of America.

Topic Two: Healy appeals to logos by insisting Romney is a good businessman and can run the country effectively.

Example 1: He pulled Massachusetts out of its massive debt and gave the state a brighter future.

Explain: Mitt Romney turned the state around in a financial sense but not only pulling it out of debt but creating a “rainy day” fund meaning they now have money.

Example 2: Romney cut taxes 19 times while Governor of Massachusetts.

Explain: The Governor helped the people living in that state continuously save money, which is logically better for those who benefited from the tax cuts.

Example 3: Romney made creating jobs a top priority; therefore he can do the same for the U.S.

Explain: Romney is a good business man who can obviously create jobs and knows how to make money. He has the knowledge and skill to pull our country out of debt and create more jobs for the American people.

Conclusion: The speech effectively applied pathos and logos to convey the specific message the speaker was arguing for.

Outline Form for Essay 2

WORKING THESIS: John Kerry urges voters to vote for Barack Obama by appealing to Ethos and Logos.

I.   Topic 1:  John Kerry absolutely would be considered an influential and authoritative figure on who should be considered for the upcoming presidential election.  First off he was the democratic nominee for presidency in the 2004 election.  Americans are aware of who Senator John Kerry is and what he stands for due to his previous attempt to become the president in 2004.  Secondly he is currently the senior senator from Massachusetts he has been in the senate since 1985.  His political career actually began in 1972 when he initially ran for congress.  His extremely vast experience from a career of more than 40 years active in politics gives his opinion and insight a lot of credibility.  Third John Kerry is also a decorated Vietnam War veteran; he served a total of four years in the Naval Reserve.  Four months of that time was deployed as an officer in charge of a swift boat in South Vietnam.  While there he was awarded a silver star and three purple hearts.  The fact that he has been on the “Front Line” and has experienced combat himself also adds to his credibility as an authoritative speaker for the upcoming election.

II.   Topic 2:  Logos

A.  Example:  The fundamental choice

1.  Explain:  that president Obama has proven he is capable whereas Romney’s is extreme and lacks the necessary judgment.

B. Example:  Mitt Romney’s weakness on foreign policy
              1.  Explain:  John uses logic taking some of the quotes and things that Mitt Romney has done poorly so far
              C.  Example: Our Troops

1.  Explain:  Obama’s attempts to care for the troops that are returning and Romney’s lack of paying tribute.

The first body paragraph of essay 2

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/80890.html

President Obama, who is hoping to be reelected for the second time, gave his speech at Democratic National Convention on September 6th, 2012 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He started his speech with sense of appreciation toward his family which shows he values his family and in general the family organ and sense of loving more than anything in his life. Then he thanked his chairwoman which shows he is thankful forever thong that other have done for him. The purpose of this speech is a mixture of persuasion and informing. An example of persuasion in the speech is when he said “when you pick up that ballot to vote – you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation.”, and an example of informing in his speech was when he described his main goals for the next four years will be focused on jobs and the economy; taxes and deficits; energy and education; war and peace. In the last part of his introduction president Obama talked about how important is to choose the right path for the future by considering this preparation he came to his main thesis for his speech. His thesis is his path of fighting to restore the values that built the largest middle class and the strongest economy the world has ever known. The rest of his speech is a well organized argument with the different topics that all of them peruse his thesis.
