Week 4: Rhetorical Analysis Block 1
In the image above that I chose for my essay, you can clearly see what the message is about "Birth Control". Which is a very controversial topic for most people, especially parents. Many parents have trouble deciding whether to put their teenage daughters on Birth Control because it has it's pros and cons. In the image you see a fairly young women in her late twenties to early thirties staring at a poster as if she is reading it. The picture is in black and white perhaps to show that it is from another decade. The young women is dressed in a somewhat dated striped dress and is sitting in a slouched posture. In the background you can see drawings pinned on the wall behind her that seem to have been drawn by children. Everything about the picture seems to have been placed in that form, from the drawings on the wall to the delicate way she holds the poster as if to show every detail of it. The poster is also very large to show the wording and get the message across of what it is advertising. The message is that women should use birth control and other contraceptives.
With it's huge title "You Can Decide How Many Children You Want" what women wouldn't stop and pay attention? It grabs you in from the very beginning ! Certainly every women would love to be able to control how many children they have. It would save the worry of any unwanted pregnancies, but is this possible? Admittedly birthcontrol can prevent pregnancy when taken properly, however it can sometimes have some side effects. For example, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and breakthrough bleeding can all be side effects of taking birth control pills. Some can be more severe depending on the type of "BC".
This is just one reason having contraceptives are controvesial. Another issue people have with birth control is religion. Some people believe that pregnancy shouldn't be prevented and should be embraced. In other words if you become pregnant you should keep the baby. This is why we have shows like "19 Kids and Counting" their family is an example of this.
This controversy leaves use thinking, what is best? Should there be contriceptives? Or should we just go with the flow? Studies show that more young women use birth control now than in the past. Therefore it is becoming more and more popular and more parents are opening up and putting their daughters on birth control because in the end it will stop most unwanted pregnancies among teens.

I agree, this poster definitely grabs the readers attention. Any woman would love a way to fully stop unwanted preganancies. But that is only to refrain from having sex. I believe birth control is a positive choice. Some parents refuse the use of birth control because they do not want to believe their child is having sex. But what if it happens? it is better to be safe than sorry. Most parents want to avoid the subject of their teen having sex and believe it does not happen. Which only causes more harm to the situation. In my opinion it is better to prepare for the situation. Is it better to find out your kid is having sex? or that a baby will be arriving in 9 months?
ReplyDeleteI think you did a good job at analyzing this visual. You get your points across very good. I feel that the picture is effective in getting the message across about birth control. It seems like it was around the time when birth control just got started. Overall I think this picture was a good choice because it has so many things that you could talk about.
