Bound to Buy Discussion
After reading the article "Bound to Buy: The Ten Types of Consumers that
Overspend" I realize that I in fact, carry one of the traits listed
when acting as a consumer. The trait I fall under is the hapless
negotiator. I feel that having the right personal opinion about someone is more important than making a scene of trying to get a bargain, so I
usually tried to avoid confrontation when buying anything. As a kid I
was always shy and wouldn't speak up when talking to adults, so I think
this could be the contributing factor. An instance when this has
occurred is when I visited new york as a tween. There were many small businesses along the sides of the streets trying to sell counterfeit watches, purses, and movies
for a cheaper than retail price. I already knew that most items were fake but I
couldn't speak up when I was getting ripped off myself. When looking
for a wallet downtown I was suckered by a convincing salesman to
purchase a 20 dollar pseudo billfold that I wasn't sure if I wanted or not, the
only thing I did know was that it was as low of a quality as a happy
meal. In the end, I purchased a 20 dollar wallet that lasted about a week
due to my inability to open my mouth and just say "no thank you" when I was observing the kiosk.
